Decide For Yourself

Decisions, decisions. Every day we have to make them. Some are simple enough: what to eat, what clothes to wear, what TV show to watch. But sometimes we encounter some that can be much tougher, demanding all of our thoughts and energies as we struggle to make our choice. Where should I go to college? Or should I not go? Should I get married? Divorced? Have children? Move away? Take this new job? After listing pros and cons, talking with those we trust, praying, and, if it comes down to it, flipping a coin, we finally decide. Did we make the right choice? Only time will tell.

According to Star Wars, we need to "Choose our destiny". Sounds ominous. And sometimes that's what we truly are doing: making life-altering decisions If you believe in destiny, you really had no choice: it was predetermined. But if you believe in free will, then the choice is yours. And therein lies the key: it is yours. It is your decision to make and your life to live. While your choices do ultimately affect other people, you have to live with yourself first. Don't make your decisions based on what other people say you should think. Think for yourself. Answer for yourself. Listen to what trusted friends have to say, but then go with whatever is right for you. And when you look at yourself in the mirror ten minutes or ten years from now, you'll know that your choices - whether they turned out well or not - were the right ones for you.

Whatever you do, you need courage. Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising which tempt you to believe that your critics are right. To map out a course of action and follow it to the end, requires some of the same courage which a soldier needs.
-- Ralph Waldo Emerson

My basic principle is that you don't make decisions because they are easy; you don't make them because they are cheap; you don't make them because they're popular; you make them because they're right.
-- Theodore M. Hesburgh, President, Notre Dame

Freedom is being able to live with the consequences of your decisions.
